The Course

Dolphin Head Golf Course was originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974.

The Course weaves its way through stately pines and huge oaks at the northern end of beautiful Hilton Head Plantation. Port Royal Sound, with its gusty winds, is in view as you play the fourteenth hole. You will notice those winds on several of the back nine holes. The Course is designed to support one of the simple facts of golf: Stay in the fairways, hit the greens and putt well. If you do this, you will have no problems at Dolphin Head. If you stray, you will find it challenging, but playable golf course.

The Wildlife

As you wind your way about Dolphin Head's Course, you may notice some of Hilton Head Island's favorite native species. You will see the Great Blue Heron, the White Egret, Ibis and many other birds. You may also see a few deer crossing a fairway or green. Take a minute to gaze at the large Hawk and Osprey
soaring in the sky. These are the things that make Hilton Head Island and Dolphin Head Golf Club desirable items in your future.

The Par 3's

The Course has a formidable set of par 3's from the back tees. They are the longest set in this area, averaging almost 200 yards. However, if you are inclined to play the other tees, you will find them playable, while still requiring your best shot.

Bunkers

Sand bunkers are plentiful as you play the Course. Over fifty, ranging in size from small to extremely large, invite you to test your skills.

The Water Hazards

Water hazards and lateral water hazards come into play on as many as thirteen holes. Most of these are small to large lagoons, strategically placed to accomodate errant shots.

Elevated Greens & Green-side Mounding

A trademark of Dolphin Head Golf Course is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach shot area, accentuated by numerous mounds around the greens.

Undulating Greens

Greens on holes number 3, 10, 15 and 18 were redesigned between 1993-1996 by Clyde Johnston. There are few flat putts awating you at Dolphin Head. Most holes will provide a fine challenge to even the best putter.
